NICE2HAVE KIT - Portable Dehumidifier
Condensation affects every yacht to a greater or lesser extent. Most of the moisture comes from your breath as you breath out. Other moisture enters with warm air which, as it cools, cannot hold that moisture so releasing it onto any cold surface.
A well designed yacht will have deck vents to draw in cold air and deliver it low down in the yacht which will push warm air, and its moisture, out of high up vents and hatches. However many yachts do not have enough to cope properly with warm climates.
Condensation can be very bad on production GRP fleet yachts where internal surfaces are not well insulated from the outer skin. There is nothing worse than sleeping on a damp bunk and waking up next morning in a shower as the condensation happily drips down on your head.
A wide range of small portable dehumidifier units (Amazon search opens in new tab) can be found that are about the size of “carry-on luggage” bag. They will keep the yacht accommodation dry and fresh. Most commercial types do require 220vAC so they are best used when on shore power or with a GenSet.
We use an AirForce BQDD122FW, bought from B&Q. It does exactly what it syas on the can, its light, silent in operation and easily stored when not in use.
