Occasionally you will misjudge a passage length and arrive, after dark, into a pitch black anchorage or mooring area. You know there are mooring balls there to use but where are they? Or indeed how do you stay away from them if anchoring?
Torches are pretty useless except at very short range and all they really do is destroy your natural night vision.
Many years ago, on a whim at a boat show, I bought a 1st generation version - I've never regretted that purchase.
It generates a green screen image of your surroundings using whatever light is available. Mounted on the side is an infra-red penlight which is amazingly powerful to add extra light. It improves the display for up to 50m or so.
They are great for watching night life and spotting intruders but take care not to point them at a strong light source or they may be damaged.
The more modern Gen2 and Gen 3 units are now even better but my old unit works just fine so I can't justify the expenditure. There are many different types around varying from just over £100 to several hundred for the top models.
I would definitely recommend getting one.
