ESSENTIAL KIT - Wallet on a Lanyard
Placing your wallet on a lanyard may seem a little strange but when sailing your wallet can often develop a sudden urge to go swimming and the lanyard helps to discourage it from leaping overboard. My wallet did just that in 1986 when I was first learning to sail so I've worn it on a lanyard ever since.
In addition, I have been pick-pocketed twice in our 10 years afloat. Once in Barcelona and once in Rome.
On both occasions I never felt the wallet leave my pocket, very slick! However when it got to the limit of the lanyard in tugs on my belt. Imagine the look on the pick-pocket's face as the wallet is pulled out of their fingers to bounce back against my leg. I gave a big smile and sauntered off. They were too busy disappearing quickly.
I use a long black boot lace threaded through the wallet and stitched to form a simple loop which can be fastened around my belt.
One of my cruising friends always used to make fun of me in the bar when he saw my "wallet on a string" as he called it. Then he left his wallet in a washroom one day so ...... he's a convert now.
